Key Highlights

Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at making urban India clean, green, and garbage-free. It builds on the success of its predecessor with an enhanced focus on sustainability, waste management, and behavioral change. Here are the key highlights of SBM-U 2.0:

  • Garbage-Free Urban India:
SBM-U 2.0 aspires to make urban areas garbage-free by ensuring 100% scientific waste management and eradicating legacy waste dumpsites through bio-mining and remediation techniques.
  • Waste Segregation at Source:
Emphasis on source segregation of municipal solid waste into wet, dry, and hazardous categories to facilitate efficient recycling and disposal.
  • Circular Economy Approach:
Adoption of a circular economy model where waste is treated as a resource, promoting recycling, reuse, and recovery.
  • Sustainable Sanitation:
Strengthened focus on the management of sludge and wastewater, particularly in smaller cities, through the development of wastewater treatment plants and safe reuse practices.
  • Eliminating Single-Use Plastics (SUP):
Intensified efforts to phase out single-use plastics and promote alternatives that are environmentally friendly.
  • Integration of Technology:
Use of advanced technologies like geo-tagging, GPS tracking, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for real-time monitoring of waste collection and processing.
  • Capacity Building:
Training and upskilling urban local bodies and sanitation workers to efficiently manage urban waste and adopt sustainable practices.
  • Behavioral Change Campaigns:
Implementation of robust Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) strategies to foster public awareness and encourage behavioral change towards cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Focus on Smaller Cities:
Targeted interventions in smaller towns and peri-urban areas to ensure equitable sanitation and waste management solutions across urban India.
  • Community Engagement and Partnerships:
Promotion of community participation and collaboration with private sector partners, NGOs, and civil society organizations to drive sustainable change.
